Activa® Therapy from Medtronic is one of the most significant and
innovative advances in the treatment of neurological movement disorders
in decades. The treatment uses a surgically implanted medical device, similar
to a cardiac pacemaker, to deliver carefully controlled electrical stimulation
to precisely targeted areas within the brain. Stimulation of these areas
appears to block the brain signals that cause the motor symptoms associated
with Dystonia as well as the two other most common movement disorders,
Essential Tremor and Parkinson's disease.
As a result of treatment
with Activa, many patients with these conditions achieve greater control
over their body movements. To date, more than 20,000
people worldwide have been treated with Activa Therapy for Parkinson's
disease or Essential Tremor.
